WPP Group has bolstered its Italian media offering with the purchase (subject to regulatory approval) of the nation’s leading independent shop Media Club.

The agency will continue to run as a separate entity within WPP’s Mediaegde:CIA network.

Based in Milan and Rome, Media Club has an 86-strong workforce and posted revenues of €12 million ($11.9m; £7.7m) last year.

The deal – terms of which were not disclosed – strengthens WPP’s hand against Carat, the biggest media agency in Italy and the only one with billings of over €1 billion.
