MOUNTAIN VIEW, California: Google's world domination of online search shows no signs of being overthrown. Latest figures from web analysts comScore showed it powered more than half the searches carried out across the globe in August.

More than 61 billion searches were performed overall, by 750 million internet users. Over 37m of those searches were made by Google.

Second, but lagging far behind, was Yahoo! with 8.5bn, while Chinese language search engine Baidu came third with 3.2bn.

ComScore says most search activity happens in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes countries such as China, Japan and India.

Europe had the second largest total of searchers (210 million), followed by North America (206 million).

The most underdeveloped market is in the Middle East-Africa region with just 30 million searchers.
