LONDON: At the end of the final quarter in 2006, nearly half (48.5%) of Britain's 60 million television sets were receiving programmes via a digital device, up from 44.7% in Q3 and 39% in Q4 2005.

The update is published by communications regulator Ofcom in its quarterly Digital Television Progress Report. In total, 77.2% of all UK homes now have some form of digital TV, up from 73.3% in the third quarter of 2006 and 69.5% at the end of 2005.

The latest quarter also saw continued growth in the number of secondary sets converted to digital - over nine million in all - a significant increase on 7.9m at the end of Q3 and just over 6m a year ago.
