The November elections brought about a political earthquake whose aftershocks will be felt all the way to the Presidential election in the year 2000. While the Republicans lost only five seats from their majority in the House, an immediate leadership upheaval was unleashed. With the departure of Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), the Congress now is holding its breath, waiting to see what type of impact this will have on the political landscape and the political agenda.
