In 1972 the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) launched its first major public-service campaign, designed to encourage support for 40 private black colleges and universities. The campaign was done with help from the Advertising Council, Inc., a nonprofit group that coordinated and produced public-service ad campaigns, and from advertising agency Young & Rubicam International Inc., which volunteered its services.
