Some readership surveys excite controversy, others maintain an air of unruffled placidness. The PES and BMRC come into the former category. Nowadays the NRS too is a focus of contention, but it has not always been like that. In the early seventies, people complained that the NRS was too bland.

The TGI and EBRS are surveys of the second category. Survey follows survey with calm acceptance. For those who sponsor, carry out and use readership surveys, lack of controversy is a boon. But for those trying to write headlines grabbing features...
