What does it mean to «blow the whistle» in the workplace? What is a «whistleblower»?

We know that reporting a wrongdoing in the workplace often leads to significant challenges for the employee. The Joint Police Union even goes as far as to recommend its members not to report for risk of jeopardizing their jobs and careers. Research shows that employees who report a wrongdoing in the workplace risk bullying and social rejection, and have higher rates of sick leave.
