The German cabinet and instrument maker Heinrieh Engelhard Steinweg (1797-1871)—who built his first piano in his kitchen—and his wife and eight children, seeking a more favorable manufacturing environment, emigrated to New York City from Seesen in 1851 and Americanized their name to Steinway. He soon put his piano-making skills to good use, starting his own piano manufacturing business in 1853 in a rented shop located in a loft on Varick Street.
