INTRODUCTION

Despite increased medical attention, media coverage and public recognition, the cluster of factors contributing to the development of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia remains inadequately specified. The four major categories of risk factors that have been theoretically associated with disordered eating – biological, psychological, familial and sociocultural – are conceptually disparate (White 1992).
