Beginning in 1958, the all-purpose detergent Mr. Clean was embodied in the form of a namesake cartoon "spokescharacter." A muscled, bald-headed manly figure modeled after actor Yul Brynner, the exotic-looking "big guy" immediately put the new Procter & Gamble product on the map in the highly competitive market for cleansers. By the late 1990s the Mr. Clean brand was used by 8.5 million households in the United States alone and was sold in 18 countries worldwide.
