In 1991 the Pepsi-Cola Company launched an advertising campaign that featured musician Ray Charles singing a jazz-influenced jingle for Diet Pepsi. After three of the spots aired during the National Football League's Super Bowl, Pepsi and its advertising agency, BBDO Worldwide, New York, were flooded with enthusiastic responses from viewers. Although Pepsi and its foremost competitor, the Coca-Cola Company, had often employed celebrities to hawk their soft drinks and thus try to gain an edge over each other, the positive reaction to the Ray Charles Diet Pepsi...
