Historic Scotland

BACKGROUND

Historic Scotland (HS) is an Executive Agency of the Secretary of State for Scotland, established in April 1991 having previously been known as Historic Buildings and Monuments, Scotland (HBM).

HS has two main functions:

  1. PROTECTING Scotland's built heritage buildings, dwellings, features and structures of historical significance across public and private ownership.
  2. PROMOTING and PRESENTING historical 'Properties in Care' sites which are managed by HS for the enjoyment of the public.

This paper relates specifically to the latter function only.
