Since 1912 the Girl Scouts of the United States of America has been a well known and popular organization for girls and young women aged 5 to 17. In October 1998 membership stood at 3.6 million, the highest in 26 years. Overall, more than 40 million women have been Girl Scouts, including such prominent public figures as Jane Pauley, Sandra Day O'Connor, Elizabeth Dole, Nancy Lopez, and Jackie Joyner Kersey.
