Ford Motor Company, based in Dearborn, Michigan, entered 2005 in a difficult position. The automaker had sold only 3.15 million vehicles in the previous year, a million units less than what it had sold annually at the beginning of the decade. The company had been hem-orrhaging market share as well, dropping to 18.6 percent in 2004 after spending much of the 1990s with more than 25 percent.
