Snapchat, Instagram, Pokemon Go, Uber, and Venmo are just a few of the app brand launches of the past five years that have gone on to become household names. Using the wide range of connected data at its disposal, YouGov set out to understand the most significant factors driving adoption of successful mobile apps in the US, and identify the apps with the highest propensity to take off in 2018.

Subsequently we believe that the apps with the greatest likelihood to "fly" in 2018 are Moviepass, Wish, and NewsRepublic.

The surge in smartphone adoption makes apps increasingly important

A recent study found that American users spend around one month of every year using apps.1) And predictions are that 2017 will see more than 268 billion mobile downloads, while app creators are expected to pull in $77 billion in 2017, up from $58 billion in 2016.2) It is also forecasted that by 2020 there will be 6.1 billion smartphone users globally.3)
