As one of South Africa's national museums, the Iziko Slave Lodge Museum is tasked with educating South Africans about the forgotten history of slavery in our country. This is part of their Nation Building mandate, an endeavour to bring together the communities of South Africa through understanding of our history and how it still affects various communities.
However, visitor numbers to the Slave Museum have been declining over recent years, and it was vital to arrest this decline.
Between 1653 and 1856, over 71,000 slaves were brought to Cape Town.
Their history has tragically been all but forgotten.
Today, the Iziko Slave Lodge Museum in Cape Town is desperately trying to keep their memory alive despite lack of interest, funds and falling visitor numbers.
