Supermarkets, airlines, department stores, banks, fmcg brands, newspapers, hotels. Even zoos. All implore: 'spend your daily dollar, euro, yen or pound with us, not them'. Compliance with which apparently makes you and me loyal consumers.

'Loyal' has a nice noble ring, don't you think? According to the New Oxford Dictionary of English it means: 'Giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution'.

But there's loyalty and loyalty. As former US president Lyndon Baines Johnson articulated with characteristic Texan bluntness...
