A million new customers? Poles go shopping in Ireland

INTRODUCTION
Since joining the European Union in May 2004 more than one million adult Poles left Poland and started living and working in Western European countries. In Ireland they have already become a serious segment of society, accounting for circa 8% of the working population. This paper describes their shopping behaviour and influence on Irish grocery retailing. The data presented are based on both consumer and retailer opinion studies, as well as market dynamics figures.
