E-commerce is expected to grow its sales by more than $2,000bn between 2021 and 2026, by when it will take a 40% share of global chain retail sales, according to data from WARC's sibling company Edge by Ascential. This is up from 31% in 2021 and 33% in 2022.
This is a far larger increase than store-based sales and means e-commerce will account for 63% of total gross merchandise value (GMV) growth between 2021 and 2026.
Additional data shows that e-commerce penetration is highest in China, South Korea, the UK, and Brazil.
