Amazon gets in on live audio action
Amazon is reported to be building a new audio feature that will focus on live music, with users able to access real-time performances through their Amazon Music account.
What sources are saying
- Axios reports that Amazon is looking to bring in other audio options in addition to live music, such as podcasts and talk radio.
- The tech giant could pay podcast networks, musicians and celebrities to use the feature for live conversations, shows and events.
- Live audio could also be integrated into Twitch, Amazon’s live gaming platform.
Context
The pandemic has seen a surge in interest in social audio: Clubhouse grabbed headlines at the start of the year, since when Facebook, Twitter and Spotify have all launched new audio features, including live audio.
Why it matters
Amazon won’t want the headaches that come with running an audio social network but will be more interested in linking live audio to existing audio products, in the form of its voice assistant Alexa and its smart speakers, and in developing ad formats that encourage people to buy on the platform.
