Compañía Minera del Padfico (CMP) is the main producer of iron minerals on the American Pacific coast. Its main operations are located in the Atacama and Coquimbo regions, where it has a strong regional identity, with 98% of its workforce being local.
In the commune of La Higuera, in the same Coquimbo region, Puerto Cruz Grande began operations in 1913, driven by CMP. The port was a great engineering feat, as it loaded the mineral from the El Tofo mine, making Chile the main exporter of iron on the South American Pacific coast.
