The Shell Oil Company's roots in the United States go back to 1912, when Royal Dutch/Shell Group made its first shipment of Sumatran gasoline to Richmond Beach, Washington, a small port north of Seattle. After establishing a sales company in the Pacific Northwest and an oil prospecting company in Oklahoma, the Royal Dutch/Shell Group expanded its business activities in the United States during the 1920s, building refineries and setting up additional corporate entities to conduct manufacturing and research.
