Motorola, Inc., began by selling radio accessories in the 1920s, but by 2000 mobile phones were Motorola's highest-grossing product. Even though Motorola was the world's second-largest mobile-phone company behind Nokia, Inc., it was brutally affected by the tech industry's downturn in 2001. Motorola's stock price had plummeted nearly 70 percent in just 12 months. The company also announced thousands of layoffs during the same year.
