Big FMCG companies no longer rely solely on their internal resources to come up with innovations. They are turning to start-ups to help them, and as the value of this approach has become clear they have begun creating formal structures to more effectively channel the energy and ideas of these external partners to those parts of their own business that most stand to benefit. A few years back they might have been creating incubators but today they are increasingly likely to adopt an open innovation approach.
