Between 2000 and 2002 there was a plethora of new programmes in the schedule, reality shows like Popstars, Hot Property and Target, plus groundbreaking new dramas like The Sopranos were receiving big audiences and breaking new ground for television. Shortland Streetratings and advertising revenue had decreased dramatically and the local press were attacking the programme for cutting the contracts of six core cast members.
