Giles and the End of Admass

Chopping Block

Jeremy Bullmore

'I just can't wait for you to meet Giles. His mother comes from a famous New England family and his father is one of the world's most respected physicists. Giles himself was educated on three continents and has honours degrees in both business and the history of art. He played chess for Harvard and rugby for Oxford, and speaks fluent French with a very slight Provenal accent. He's by no means conventionally goodlooking but he's hugely attractive. And astonishingly, none of this seems to have gone to his head. I just can't wait for you to meet him.'

You have never met Giles and heard nothing but praise for him. Yet (if you are a man) the chances are you already dislike him intensely. Why?
