Emerging Industry Overview: Quick Care Clinics

Industry Snapshot

Quick care clinics are retail medical facilities that usually are located within the pharmacy section of drugstores, grocery stores, or discount department stores such as Wal-Mart or Target. They are referred to by a variety of names, such as walk-in clinics, immediate care facilities, and convenient care centers. The medical and business communities refer to quick care clinics as retail health clinics.

Although some clinics are staffed by physicians, most are staffed by licensed nurse practitioners, health care professionals who are registered nurses with advanced training to diagnose and treat common medical conditions. In addition, nurse practitioners can administer vaccinations, perform diagnostic screenings, and prescribe medications. Nurse practitioners often have access to an off-site physician by phone for consultations. At quick care clinics, nurse practitioners provide routine medical care to patients 18 months and older with or without appointments.
