It is still a matter for conjecture whether historians will remember the past five years as the Internet Gold Rush or the Internet Bust. But one component of the internet continues to soldier quietly forward with far-reaching impact on the lives of consumers and businesses email.

In the US alone, the number of email boxes grew by more than 50% from 1999 to 2000 (Table 1).
