Back in the early days of social media, I was super-conscious of what author Antony Mayfield calls my 'web shadow'. I used a pseudonym for my Twitter account and a URL unconnected to my name for my blog; there were no personal details on my profile pages; my Facebook security settings were much tighter than the default; and I kept my work and personal selves pretty separate, down to a different Gravatar.
