Indian marketers and advertising directors have been aware of the power of celebrities for decades. In the 1950s singer and actor Kishore Kumar fronted an ad for Brylcreem; in the 1980s cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had a long-running endorsement deal with Dinesh Suitings, and Bollywood star Jalal Agha appeared in ads for food brand Pan Parag.
