1. Backboard Magic
by Howard Brier, published by Random House, 1949
This is the first book I remember reading. I was eight years old. It's about a young boy that tried to make his school basketball team only to be dismissed numerous times. But, ultimately, his hard work pays off when he finally makes the team and ends up winning the championship game for his team. Childish, of course! But I bet I've read this book at least five times; its message of persistence and perseverance has stuck with me ever since.
