1. The Corrections
by Jonathan Franzen, published by Picador, 2002
I have a huge respect for this book and what it achieves. It depicts the breakdown of a family in an age of easy fixes and causes us to question our values and morals. Darkly humorous, it reminds me how fragile life is, and how family is the best of everything, and, whisper it, sometimes the worst. I have a worrying affinity with the dysfunction that runs throughout. Hmm, sorry kids.
