Advocacy: Bubbling to the surface
Online privacy and food advertising are among the hot issues in 2013
President Obama has been inaugurated for a second term and the members of the 113th Congress have all been sworn in. So what does 2013 hold for the marketing community?
The 2012 election was historic in some respects and status quo in others. President Obama's second term marks the first time the U.S. has seen three two-term presidents in a row since the administrations of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. The new Senate includes 20 women, the highest number of female senators in history.
However, the divided government will continue. There are 55 Democrats (including two independents who caucus with the Democrats) and 45 Republicans in the new Congress, compared to a Democratic margin of 53 to 47 in the previous Congress. Democrats also picked up seats in the House of Representatives, but Republicans remain in control by a margin of about 30 votes.
