SUNNY VIEW, California: Yahoo and San Jose-headquartered software company Adobe have teamed to offer ads on PDFs (portable document files) posted on the web or distributed via email.

The pair are developing a system enabling documents to display contextually relevant ads delivered from Yahoo's inventory at any given time. Until now, publishers have only been able to embed static ads on PDF files.

The ongoing test will lead to a broader rollout next year of pay-per-click text ads on PDF files to give publishers another revenue-generating option.

Book and magazine companies who use the format for online or emailed versions of their publications are expected to be among the heaviest users of the new service.
