LONDON: Freeview, the brand for free digital terrestrial television in the UK, has inked a deal with six hardware makers to produce dedicated digital video recorders. Among those signed up are Sony and Sharp.

The launch of time-shifting digital TV viewing - similar to BSkyB's Sky+ service - had been due in September. Some DVRs will now be available for the holiday season, but the majority will come into stores by July next year.

The launch will be supported by a major cross-media marketing campaign, including in-store promotion and online ads.
