The planned review of United Airlines’ $60 million (€59.3m; £38.1m) global media duties has been thrown into doubt after the world’s second largest airline on Monday filed for bankruptcy protection.

The account is said to have been flying toward Starcom MediaVest after UAL instigated a review in November to find a shop closer to its Chicago base. Zenith Media is the incumbent.

The airline spent $57.3m on media in 2001 (according to ad tracking firm CMR), down from $78.4m the year before.

UAL insists it can continue trading as normal under Chapter 11, which allows companies to stay in business as they restructure debt.
