The citizens of Albion, for sixteen years deprived of a new tabloid newspaper, were this weekend consoled by the arrival of the Sunday version of weekday title the Daily Star.
In a world teetering on the brink of a US attack on Iraq, the Sunday Star got things into perspective. Among its journalistic coups were stories on Soham murder suspect Ian Huntley’s proposal of marriage to girlfriend Maxine Carr, Geri Halliwell’s skimpy outfits on Popstars: The Rivals and a suspect tackle by England’s soccer captain David ‘Deck-ham’.
Publisher Richard Desmond, a part-time pornographer and owner of the Daily Star and Express Newspaper titles, believes the newcomer will not only attract readers of existing Sunday newspapers but also Daily Star readers who currently don’t buy a Sabbath paper. At 35 pence – less than half the cover price of its main rivals – they just might.
Desmond claims to have printed a million copies of issue one.
