The Daily Mail & General Trust, formerly a favourite for the hand of Hollinger International's [H-Intl] prize British asset, Telegraph Newspapers, has quit the poker table along with its partner, the venture capital firm CVC.

Still bleary-eyed at the table are the inscrutable Barclay twin brothers, Frederick and David, Knights of the Realm and serial entrepreneurs; plus a consortia of moneymen led by 3i. Up to £700 million ($1.278bn; €1.065bn) is reportedly on the table.

It is expected the dealer -- investment bank Lazard -- will announce which winners take all before the weekend.
