RALEIGH, North Carolina: At 10:35am Monday John Rigas (82) and his son Timothy (51) checked-in at the low-security Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina, even though their appeal remains undecided.
At the conclusion of their trial the pair - respectively the former chairman and cfo of Adelphia Communications - were adjudged guilty on multiple charges of securities fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and bank fraud.
Nonetheless, they were permitted to remain at liberty pending appeal. But for reasons unexplained by trial judge Leonard Sand, he later rescinded the order that permitted the duo to remain free.
Rigas père is in frail physical shape having suffered from bladder cancer. His attorney Peter Fleming junior, when asked about the effect of the fifteen-year jail sentence on Rigas' health, replied: "You can draw your own conclusions. I have nothing to say."
Once America's fifth-largest cable operator, Adelphia served over 5 million customers in thirty-one states before imploding into bankruptcy in 2002.
