LONDON: Pearson, the international media company with publications including UK newspaper the Financial Times, has posted a positive trading update prior to releasing its full-year results for 2008.

While arguing that the economic climate posed challenges in some markets in the fourth quarter of 2008, the company reports that all of its operations met performance targets last year.

Pearson, which also owns publishing company Penguin, expects to maintain its performance levels this year, despite the expected turbulence across the media and advertising markets.

Says ceo Marjorie Scardino: "We are naturally cautious about the economic environment, but we take confidence from our performance in 2008.

"Some of our markets will be tough this year and we are managing the company accordingly."
