US newspaper publisher Hollinger International has rebranded as the Sun-Times Media Group in an attempt to distance itself from the legal problems associated with its former name and chairman/ceo Lord Conrad Black.

The company, which publishes the Chicago Sun-Times and numerous community newspapers in the region, sought shareholder approval for the change last month.

Comments ceo Gordon Paris: "This change reflects our focus on delivering the highest quality local news and information in the Chicago area through our range of media properties, and also that our company is looking to our future rather than the past."

Under Black's control the firm owned titles in Canada, the Daily and Sunday Telegraph in London and newspapers in Jerusalem.

The fallen tycoon, who was ousted in 2003, and several former associates are now on bail awaiting a US trial for allegedly looting the former H-Intl of $84 million (€66.7m; £45.6m). All have denied the charges [WAMN: 19-Apr-06].
