LONDON: News International's new freebie thelondonpaper has beaten its equally young rival London Lite to the afternoon distribution contract in the capital's rail stations.

The deal, which does not include the Tube subway network, could deliver a potential readership of nearly one million commuters to the title, launched in a flurry of competition last month [WARC News: 05-Sept-06].

Comments Ian Clark, general manager of NI's free newspapers division: "We are confident it can add significant numbers to our distribution."

London Lite publisher Associated Newspapers is in the running with several others for the afternoon contract in London Underground stations. Transport for London, which runs the network, is expected to announce the winner by the end of the year.
