NEW YORK: US network ABC Television, a unit of the Walt Disney Company, is to dispense with 200 staff and freeze a further 200 unfilled vacancies, reports the Financial Times.

These four hundred positions equate to around 5% of the broadcaster's global workforce – thought to be in the region of 6,750 – although it is believed that the US will bear the brunt of the swinging axe.

In addition, there will be some 600 voluntary buyouts at Disney's theme parks division.

Commiserated an empiric Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney-Media Networks and president of Disney-ABC Television, in a memo to employees: "Change is never easy, and becomes even harder to embrace during times of turbulence and uncertainty."
