America’s Academy of Television Arts & Science has rescheduled for October 7 its annual Emmy Awards, postponed after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Said the event’s executive producer Don Mischer: “It will be very different from what we had planned and what we've seen before.”
The usually glitzy celebrity arrivals will not be televised; instead there will be “a modified arrival area with a red carpet” where the media will be permitted to congregate, celebs will be requested to dress down for the occasion and the opening address – to be delivered by respected former CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite instead of event host, comedienne Ellen DeGeneres – will have unusual gravitas.
Indeed, the show’s producers intend that the latter quality rather than showbiz pizzazz will be the keynote, avoiding possible discomfort to its TV audience and the glitterati attending the event at Hollywood’s Shrine Auditorium – the first occasion of its kind since the tragedy.
