LONDON: The English language service of Qatar-based Arabic news network Al Jazeera has appointed veteran Canuck broadcaster Tony Burman (pictured) as its new managing director.

He replaces Nigel Parsons, who has been promoted to the role of MD of business acquisition and development.

Burman was previously editor-in-chief and executive director of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, from which he departed in July 2007.

The network's director-general Wadah Khanfar said: "We welcome Tony in his new role and look forward to his contribution in building on Al Jazeera's success. The current change is designed to enrich the core of Al Jazeera's mission."

Adds Burman: "In the months ahead, I will also put an emphasis on the expansion of Al Jazeera's audience reach into important new areas of the world, most notably North America."

The English version of Al Jazeera is now available in 100 million homes worldwide.
