When Jesus ascended to Heaven, his last words were reportedly addressed to the Puerto Ricans: 'Don't do a thing 'till I get back'.
This probably unfounded American joke articulates the puritan work ethic which is supposed to underpin the North Atlantic working person's psyche. Work is good. Time out is for slackers and wasters. 'You must be very busy' are words we reserve for people we esteem and admire.
As Europe gets back to its desk after the summer vacation, these ideas are worth pondering. What drives us to work?...
