Insights from Latin America

The rapid changes in Latin America are the focus of many papers presented at ESOMAR's recent conference in Mexico City.

These include The complex environment of a changing population, discussing core social trends playing out across eight countries, and Digital boost, exploring the online behaviours of Latin-American consumers.

Meanwhile, Sustainable Brazil concentrates on the birth and development of Brazil's burgeoning middle class, as does Your table is ready, which reports on Nestlé's research into affluent Brazilians' out-of-home eating.

North American Effies

The recent North American Effie Awards saw Golds bestowed on brands from a wide range of categories.

In the technology sector, business services firm IBM was lauded for both its Smarter Planet and Watson campaigns, as was Microsoft for the promotion of its Bing search engine.

Other Golds included cable company Comcast's baseball-led campaign, AT&T's work on the dangers of texting when driving, Chobani's repositioning of Greek yoghurt and fabric softener Purex's Walmart-focused strategy.

Admap Prize: Planning 3.0

The winners of the inaugural Admap Prize lead the latest issue and together provide a spectrum of views on what the future holds for strategic planning (the papers that follow are free-to-view until 20 June).

In the Gold-winning essay, Dare's Nick Hirst argues that planners need to become architects of the user experience, creating communications that perfectly fit specific channels.

Independent consultant Tom Woodnutt's silver-winning entry claims the future of the discipline lies in creating mutually beneficial partnerships between brands and consumers.

And in her Bronze-winning paper, Albion's Philippa Dunjay predicts a key role for planners in identifying microcultures and creating touchpoints connecting them to brands.
