MUMBAI: Samsung, the South Korean consumer electronics giant, is the brand that Indian consumers trust the most, according to a listing of 1,000 brands in the country.

The company climbed 17 places since last year, replacing its subsidiary Samsung Mobile, which plunged in the rankings following bad publicity about incidents of its Galaxy Note 7 catching fire.

Two other consumer electronics multinationals, Sony and LG, retained their places as the second and third most trusted brands in India. Meanwhile, Apple climbed 12 ranks to come fourth and Tata Group took fifth, making it the only Indian company to occupy the top ten.

That is according to brand analytics firm TRA Research, which questioned more than 2,500 consumers across 16 Indian cities to compile its Brand Trust Report 2017.

Now in its seventh year, the report ranked automakers Honda and Maruti Suzuki in sixth and seventh place respectively, while US technology firm Dell came eighth.

Lenovo, the Chinese technology giant, climbed 18 places to come ninth, while Indian scooter maker Bajaj rounded out the top ten.

In terms of the highest-scoring categories, Forbes India reported that food and beverages came top with 161 brands included in the rankings, followed by FMCG (128 brands) and then automobiles (73 brands).

"Samsung's 17-rank leap to top position and the 12-rank climb of Apple to fourth rank over last year are significant," said N Chandramouli, Chief Executive of TRA Research.

"Of the 2016 list, four brands slipped out of the top 10 of 2017, namely Samsung Mobiles, Nokia, Godrej, and ICICI Bank. Also, it is more and more noticeable that NCR is steadily becoming the brand capital of India, with several leading brands located out of here."

That was a reference to the National Capital Region, which includes New Delhi, the home of many of India's most trusted brands, including Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurved, the fastest growing FMCG firm in the country.
