MUMBAI: Nokia and Vodafone, the telecoms firms, and Flipkart, the ecommerce site, are all regarded as being leading "lifestyle" brands by Indian consumers.

The findings come from the Nielsen India Consumer Rankings, which relate to lifestyle categories that matter to the average urban Indian and are based on popularity and consumer experience. Rankings cover six categories: e-tailing, smartphone apps, mobile handsets, mobile operators, books, and international travel.

Piyush Mathur, Nielsen India President, reported in The Economic Times, said the rankings reflected the pulse of urban consumers, and provided a different lens to view the lifestyle choices that urban consumers are making every day.

"While we have always provided uncommon consumer insights for our clients, with this initiative we are taking insights from cities across the country, and giving back to consumers," he said.

In the telecom sector, Nokia was the preferred mobile handset brand, followed by Samsung, Blackberry and Sony Ericsson.

Among mobile operators, Vodafone was followed by Aritel and Idea. In this sector, network quality was the most important driver of customer satisfaction, followed by customer service, service positioning and data services.

Flipkart came top of the e-tailers, with eBay in second spot and Homeshop18 in third place; Amazon, however, languished in eighth.

WhatsApp, a messaging tool, came first in the apps category. Facebook, Google Play Store and Nimbuzz, another chat app, made up the next three spots.

Nielsen India vice-president Ranjeet Laungani said the rankings acknowledged that consumers not only want to be heard but also be better informed.

"These rankings will provide the average urban consumer with a neutral, fact-based consumer view on everyday categories that are relevant to them," he said.
