MILAN: The latest Italian daily newspaper readership survey from Audipress has for the first time included free newspapers - Leggo, City and Metro - all having passed the minimum threshold of 750,000 readers, respectively achieving 2,008,000; 1,691,000; and 1,647,000.

Overall, the nation's daily newspaper market reached 22.5 million readers in 2006.

Leading the pack was sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport with 3,603,000 readers. In second place was La Repubblica/L'Espresso with 3,015,000 readers (+0.4%), followed by Corriere della Sera with 2,577,000 (-4.6%).

All three titles are owned by RCS Media Group.
